UNITY congratulates board member Jen Christensen on receiving the 2016 CNN Diversity Ovation Award.
As both NLGJA president and a UNITY board member, Jen continues to play an important role in advocating for and fair coverage and diversity across the board.
“UNITY is very fortunate to have Jen’s voice on our board and I’m thrilled that she’ll be returning for another term next year,” said UNITY’s president-elect Neal Justin, media critic for the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “That CNN recognizes the hard work she puts in, often on her own personal time, advocating for all voices, in and out of the newsroom, is a credit to both her bosses and to Jen herself. We’re lucky to have her. So is the industry.”
In addition to her volunteer time as a UNITY board member, Christensen is a producer and video editor for CNN’s health, medical and wellness unit, and is also a writer and producer for CNN.com. She has been a member of NLGJA since 1996 and has served as its president since 2013. She has previously received Peabody and Alfred I. duPont–Columbia University Awards.
UNITY Journalists for Diversity is a strategic alliance that:
- Advocates fair and accurate coverage about diversity — especially race, nationality, ethnicity, gender identity and sexual orientation.
- Aggressively challenges that industry to staff its organizations at all levels to reflect the country’s diversity.
The UNITY board is made up of representatives from the Asian American Journalists Association, the Native American Journalists Association, and NLGJA: The Association of LGBT Journalists.
