East-West Center Announces New China-U.S. Journalists Exchange Program Travel and dialogue program is designed to deepen public understanding of the two countries and their relationship HONOLULU (June 17, 2010) -- The East-West Center has announced the launch of a new journalism exchange program that will bring six U.S. journalists to China and six Chinese journalists to the U.S., culminating in a dialogue between the two groups at the EWC in Honolulu, Hawaii. Applications are due by Tuesday, July 13 for the inaugural China-United States Journalists Exchange, scheduled for September 11-25, 2010. The theme for the 15-day program is "China-U.S. Relations: Impacts and Implications for the Global Economic Recovery." "With China's increasing economic and political power, and the growing importance of China-U.S. relations in global affairs, we believe it is more important than ever that journalists from the two nations have an opportunity to better understand each other's societies, and to exchange viewpoints on major issues of common concern," said Susan Kreifels, coordinator of the Center's media seminar programs. Participating journalists from China will travel to Washington, D.C., New York City and Los Angeles, while the U.S. journalists will visit Beijing, Chengdu and Hong Kong. Both groups will meet with government officials, community and business leaders, educators, local journalists, and others to gain insights on diverse issues and perspectives that shape the relationship between the two countries. After their study tours, all participants will meet for a two-day dialogue at the East-West Center to discuss U.S.-China relations and how media coverage of issues between the two countries can be improved. The program, co-sponsored by the EWC, the All-China Journalists Association and the Better Hong Kong Foundation, is open to working print, broadcast and online journalists with at least five years of experience from China and the United States. The program covers all air transportation, lodging, and program-related ground transportation and meals for participating journalists. The new China-U.S. exchange program joins a variety of existing EWC travel-study programs for journalists, including similar Northeast Asia exchanges with Japan and South Korea.
