SANTA FE — UNITY: Journalists for Diversity will join groups in Santa Fe for a special forum on immigration with award-winning author and journalist Sonia Nazario.

Sonia NazarioThe event at the New Mexico History Museum on Thursday, Oct. 8, will feature a talk by Nazario and a special one-on-one conversation with UNITY President Russell Contreras.

Nazario’s work focuses on issues of immigration and human rights. Her book, “Enrique’s Journey,” follows a Honduran boy on an odyssey that takes him away from his home country in search of his mother, and a better life, in the United States. Nazario’s reporting tells the story of Enrique, his family, and the countless refugee children making similar journeys.

The event, sponsored by Somos Un Pueblo, Santa Fe Public Schools and UNITY, is scheduled to take place at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20.



UNITY Journalists for Diversity is a strategic alliance that:

  1. Advocates fair and accurate coverage about diversity — especially race, nationality, ethnicity, gender identity and sexual orientation.
  2. Aggressively challenges that industry to staff its organizations at all levels to reflect the country’s diversity.

The UNITY board is made up of representatives from the Asian American Journalists Association, the Native American Journalists Association, and NLGJA: The Association of LGBT Journalists.
