UNITY Executive Director
UNITY: Journalists for Diversity concluded its year-end board meeting last weekend.
The board discussed how to further the organization’s mission and has begun planning a caucus on diversity issues. The summit, planned for spring 2014, will bring together journalism industry leaders to develop training to diversify news coverage.
“We had a very productive weekend and are energized about UNITY’s determination to advance diversity in the news media,” UNITY President David Steinberg said. “The commitment of my fellow board members to our mission is strong, and we have a lot of momentum for launching programs in the coming year to help the industry.”
Journalism leaders who would like to participate in the caucus are invited to contact Steinberg: email@example.com. UNITY will also reach out to news leaders who know that serving a diverse audience is crucial to the industry’s future.
UNITY is moving forward with plans to hire a full-time executive director. A job description will be posted by early January.
Early next year, Steinberg will convene a virtual town hall for anyone interested in learning more about UNITY. The board’s next meeting will be March 14-16 in McLean, VA.
UNITY Journalists for Diversity is a strategic alliance that:
- Advocates fair and accurate coverage about diversity — especially race, nationality, ethnicity, gender identity and sexual orientation.
- Aggressively challenges that industry to staff its organizations at all levels to reflect the country’s diversity.
The UNITY board is made up of representatives from the Asian American Journalists Association, the Native American Journalists Association, and NLGJA: The Association of LGBT Journalists.
