UNITY Executive Director
UNITY: Journalists for Diversity is pleased to announce Ala’a Ibrahim has been named the UNITY 2017 reporting fellow. Ibrahim, who is studying multimedia journalism and business at the University of Texas at Austin, was chosen out of a group of highly qualified and dedicated young journalists from across the country. She will represent UNITY at five annual conferences focused on diversifying newsrooms and the stories they tell.
“UNITY’s mission is a cause that I care deeply about, and I’m humbled to be able to represent such an amazing organization across the nation,” Ibrahim said. “I have dedicated much of my college career to advocating for diversity and inclusion in media, and this is a wonderful opportunity for me to continue doing so on a larger platform.”
Ibrahim stood out among the applicants this year with her eye for untold stories and unique perspectives. She brings strong multimedia storytelling skills to the fellowship, and her perspective as the child of Sudanese immigrants brings valuable context to her reporting.
UNITY board member and judge for the fellowship Graham Lee Brewer said he was impressed with her talent for finding untold experiences.
“When reviewing Ala’a’s work, it was obvious early on that she has a knack for getting people to open up, even when what they have to say is taboo or contentious,” he said. “I’m excited to see what she learns over the course of the summer and how the experiences inform her work.”
“I’ve always had a fascination with people, so I plan on connecting and developing relationships with the individuals I meet during my time across the country,” Ibrahim said. “The things I will see and experience during this fellowship will help shape me as a storyteller and leader.”
The fellowship was created in 2014 based on feedback from the first annual diversity caucus convened by the UNITY board. Fellows cover the conventions of the Asian American Journalists Association, The National Association of Black Journalists, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the Native American Journalists Association and the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association, with convention fees, travel and hotel accommodations provided.
