According to a medical study issued by the US Health Department (New England Medical Journal), almost one third of the African-Americans responding said they felt they had been discriminated against when attempting to obtain health care.

Seattle´s African-American Community Health Network (www.aachn.org) battles discrimatory health-care practices, which can prove to be lethal for the Black community.  In addition, they coordinate health promotion and education projects and promote healthy lifestyles. AACHN is the only African-American owned and operated 501(c)(3) non-profit health services and development, corporation in Washington.  The agency was founded as the NW Multi-Cultural Health Institute on April 1, 1993.

One of the bigger projects that AACHN is currently working on involves constructing an assisted living facility for elder African-Americans.  Much in the same light of the newly constructed International District Square Village for the Asian-American community, this building will provide living, bathroom, and laundry facilities for its elderly residents. To be located in the Central District of Seattle, this $8.4 million, 100-unit home will serve the surrounding African-American community.

To contact the African-American Community Health Network, refer to their website, www.aachn.org or call (206) 860-9883.
